BOTTOM LINE: The federal government will now recognize same-sex marriages from states that allow such marriages, and California now joins that list . The California decision is based the premise that the private party who defended Prop 8 in court had no standing to do so. The decision does not establish whether or not there is a Constitutional right to such marriages for all citizens.
